Niels Dreyer highlights the threats of land clearance to Australia's
biodiversity. A related issue has recently been advertised in Victoria.
In Victoria "Habitat fragmentation as a threatening process for fauna in
Victoria" has been nominated as a Potentially Threatening Process under the
state's Flora and Fauna Guarantee Act 1988.
The Scientific Advisory Committee has made a Preliminary Recommendation to
support this nomination and advertisements were placed in state newspapers
on 15 July. The report mentions the Red-tailed Black Cockatoo and Rufous
Bristlebird as examples where habitat fragmentation has threatened the
conservation of these birds.
A 3 page report on this recommendation is available to interested parties
and a 30 day public consultation period now follows. Please feel free to
ontact me if you're interested in a copy.
