I decided to answer everyone's questions in a single message. Firstly,
the trees are within walking distance of Botany Bay. There are a few
mangroves along the forest side of the creek. The water is either
brackish or fresh. A bit upstream there are geese and ducks, and I've
seen an Azure Kingfisher and Little Pied Cormorants and I think some
Little Blacks.
I HAVE got two field guides, the one by Pizzey and a copy of "What bird
is that?"
It was certainly not an ibis, its neck was too short, it was too
small and the legs were too short in proportion to the body.
I used Graham Pizzey's field guide to 'identify' it.
It's not really forest because it's so small, more like a big group of
trees. But there are quite a few birds in it.
I think that the trees are more likely she-oaks.
The forest was too dark and I was too far away to give a more accurate
description, plus I only saw it for about seven seconds.
