The furthest inland I've seen Pied Oystercatchers in Australia is about 400m: a pair took to roosting regularly at high tide on top of nest boxes on Bullock Swamp on French Island (BOCA Western Port survey). The contrast with overseas "pied" oystercatchers is intriguing. As a complete contrast, I saw several pairs of Magellanic Oystercatchers in the middle of the Patagonian desert, up to 200 km from the coast. One pair that I stopped and watched were holding territory on dry steppe, but there was a small soak and drain from roadhouse nearby. Kelp Gulls were also present at that spot. Richard. |
