A software company, SBSP, advertises a database and a free country list from
their site http://members.aol.com/index.html . I'm am in no way endorsing
the company nor the accuracy of their list, but it's free and may be a
starting point.
Another (and in my opinion better) one is at www.ccinet.ab.ca/merlin/ where
you can obtain database file lists. The database files are free to use and
I'd recommend downloading an evaluation copy of the listing database. I'm
thinking of junking my attempt on Access and using this. The evaluation
copy doesn't expire, it merely restricts you to a list of 100 birds. I've
not thoroughly checked the Oz list agains the Atlas or HANZAB, but what I've
seen has been pretty consistent. It also has mammal and insect lists for
counties as well.
