I don,t know about NSW but in South Aus. its illegal for a private individual to keep native fauna DEAD OR ALIVE without a permit. My understanding is that this removes any temptation for people to add to their collections by taking live birds from the wild. In this state the S.A. Museum is always pleased to recieve road kills etc (Very fresh or frozen!) to add to their collection, where they can be accessed by anyone with a genuine research interest.
