Hi all
Daintree has just set a 1998 weather record! No rain for 48 hours. I
didn't expect much change to the birds so soon however and the arrival of a
small flock of Pink-eared Duck was a treat. A Wedge-tailed Eagle put in a
rare appearence for Daintree and there has been an influx of Black-faced
Cuckoo-shrikes. Opposite the village jetty over the swampy grazing land the
sky was teeming with White-rumped Swiftlets, Welcome Swallows, Tree Martins
and Fairy Martins. Nothing all that unusual except the martins outnumbered
the swallows.
Predictably the Great-billed Heron chick left the nest in March and
the adult/s or the chick have been seen every day since 31 Mar except for 4
mornings. At the end of April I do not expect to see Black Bitterns until
November but they are still here in good numbers, 2 today, 2 yesterday, none
the day before etc
Cairns Weather Bureau posted a much warmer April than usual, about 2deg
in both mins and maximums, and you can feel it is different. Rainfall is
normal but
the subtle change into our drier season is here. For the first time since
last winter the adult crocodiles were out on the banks, in force, bringing
sighs of relief to the tour vessel skippers.
