In May '96 at the RAOU Scientific Day a talk was given by Andrew Cockburn on the Mate choice of Superb Fairy Wrens. In the Canberra Botanic Gardens one male was responsible for fathering all the offspring of the year! His success was attributed to the fact that he came into full breeding plumage in late autumn/early winter whereas all the others did so in August. The girls had noted his gleaming colour compared to their dowdy mates. It pays to wear your best gear when the girls are about. Stuart Fairbairn, Sydney ---------- |
