I saw my first two Cattle Egrets for the season yesterday (23/3) while
cycling to work. They were attending some cattle along the Yarra River
flats near Heidelberg, some kilometres north-east of the city.

To follow your theme, Rainbow Lorikeets are becoming abundant in parts of
Melbourne. Noisy flocks have been feeding in Sugar Gum (Eucalyptus
cladocalyx) blossoms at my home for some weeks now, and this morning I saw
them feeding on Peppercorn (Schinus molle) seeds, something I had not seen

No Avocets seen, but I agree, they are beautiful birds!
