I think Australian birds are all fantastic, and I couldn't really name eight
I like more than any others. The other great thing about Australia is that
it seems that even bugbear birds turn up eventually, and you can get to see
some real rarities without too much superhuman effort (I still need
convincing that Grasswrens exist, though).

I thought I'd put a list of my favourite UK birds down, because after seven
years away, a list of birds that remains in your mind is probably a very
good indictaion of the quality of 'specialness':

Merlin
Rough-legged Buzzard
Short-eared Owl
Wryneck
Golden Oriole
Brambling
Black Tern
Little Auk
Garganey (sorry)
Brent Geese
Goldeneye
Little Gull
Nightingale
Woodlark
Fieldfare
Nuthatch
Chiff-chaff
Chough

but this is far more than eight....
