Dear Andrew, I finally got around to having a look at the sound quality of the bird calls on Simpson and Day CD-ROM Birds of Australia V 4.1 following your adverse comments regarding V. 3. I'm not sure that I have software of sufficient quality to make a definitive answer. However looking at the sound waves using Creative Wave Studio (Soundblaster 64) it seems to me that while all of the voiced bird names are severely clipped, some of the bird calls are OK and others are only slightly clipped. Among the clipped calls that I found are rufous scrubbird (not surprising) and Bourkes parrot. They were recorded using 8 bit resolution. Hope this helps, Llew Rintoul |
