An interesting nights entertainment at Melbourne's (Victoria, Australia)
Sidney Myer Music Bowl final concertlast Saturday night..
While listening (along with 000s of others) to a Mendelssohn piano piece, a
large flock of Welcome Swallows twittering above the bowl canopy. Rainbow
Lorikeets and Sulphur-crested Cockatoos threatened to interrupt a quiet
piece earlier in the evening.
As night fell several hundred or possibly a 1 000 Grey-headed Flying-foxes
departed from their roost site in the Royal Botanic Gardens for feeding
spots in the leafy suburbs east of the city.
The evening finished with a rendition of the 1812 overture by Tchaikovsky
complete with fireworks from the gardens behind the bowl. Fortunately most
of the bats had left by this stage! Other species: Willy Wagtail, Magpie
Lark, Ravens (Corvus sp.) and Silver Gulls.
All this occurred just over one km from the Melbourne GPO.
