Subject: Time: 10:38 AM reconstructing PPs Date: 2/2/98 Back in the 30's a certain German leader of much notoriety conceived the idea of reconstructing the aurochs, the aggressive wild ox of the north European forests in antiquity, now long extinct. In Rome, these creatures were sometimes used to gore Christians in public when the populace got tired of watching lions. The much unlamented German seems to have thought them a bovine version of his blond, blue-eyed dream of vigour. He tried interbreeding Hungarian steppe-cattle, the remnant wild-cattle from Poland, Frisian heifers, and a few other things I don't recall. Some of the results are preserved in the zoo at Munich, and anything more ridiculously docile you couldn't imagine. Perhaps genetic reconstruction a la Jurassic Park from a preserved bird-louse would offer a better chance for the Paradise Parrot. John Clifton-Everest |
