Hi all,

Just a quick note re. the crakes at Shortland. Bumped into Trevor &
Annie Quested there last Sunday (11th) while looking for the Y. Wagtails
(never did find them). Trevor was kind enough to let me view Spotted &
Spotless Crakes in his scope, these being new for me. Thanks Trevor.

Went back yesterday (16th) for a quick look for the Wagtail again but
decided to concentrate on the crakes. I've been looking for crakes and
rails for ages and only managed a single Baillon's C. and Buff-banded R
twice before last Sunday.

What a wonderful afternoon! Crakes everwhere!!

I had superb views of several Spotless C.'s and Baillon's C.'s. Finally
managed a very good view of a Spotted C. as well. The Spotless C.'s in
particular were very approachable, several letting me get to within
10-15 metres. Didn't need binocs let alone a scope!

Baillon's C.'s were also easy binocular views.

Final count was 6 Spotless, 3 Baillon's and 2 Spotted.

I had a marvellous time watching these beautiful little birds.

Bye for now.
