Can anyone provide an address or telephone number for a Mr Neil Hermes who
apparently used to work for ANPWS? (Australian National Parkes and Wildlife
Service) or does anyone have any unpublished information relating to
Albatross
records from Norfolk Island in the 1980's?
The Birds Australia Rarities Committee (BARC) has just reopened a case
relating to a possible record of a Laysan Albatross from Norfolk Island in
1986. The problem is that there appears to be considerable confusion as to
the precise dates and other albatross records. We are hoping that Mr Hermes
may be able to assist us in sorting this out having published a short note
in
Notornis 33, p141-149 in 1986 relating to a Shy Albatross record from
Norfolk.
Our assumption is that there must have been more than one bird. Can anyone
help?
--------------------------
For those interested here is a brief outline of the problem:
An Albatross was banded photographed and released from Norfolk Island some
time in mid 1988 and apparently returned the following year September 1989.
This bird was banded as a Black-browed Albatross. The photographs were
however considered to relate to a Laysan Albatross and not a Black-browed.
The article mentioned above in Notornis relates to a sighting at the same
location on the 22nd October 1985 interestingly the bird again was captured
photographed and released. This species though was reported and published
as
a Shy Albatross.
To complicate this further BARC is now in receipt of additional photographs
of
a bird reported to be photographed and released once again at the same
location. The date though being sometime in September 1986 (original slides
dated by Kodak) and this bird is a Laysan Albatross.
Best Regards
Tony
