>From Eclectus 3, the Birds Australia Parrot Association newsletter,
published last month:
In October 1998 Dr Rob Heinsohn and Dr Stephen Garnett are to lead an
expedition to study the parrots of Iron Range (Cape York Peninsula, north
Queensland, Australia). The aim of the expedition will be to contribute to
our scant knowledge of the four tropical parrots living at Iron Range -
Eclectus Parrot, Red-cheeked Parrot, Marshall's Fig-Parrot and the Palm
Cockatoo.
The first and last of these are already the subject of studies, and
expeditioners will be able to contribute to the ongoing research. The other
two should also be nesting at that time, enabling us to make useful
observations of nesting and feeding.
It is intended that the expedition will be conducted over a two week period
with expeditioners camping in Iron Range National Park. Expeditioners will
be expected to cover their own expenses, but it is hoped to coordinate
transport so that costs are shared.
Conditions won't be easy - the weather will be hot, the roads dusty and the
work may be arduous - but it should also be fun, and the effort involved
should result in a real contribution to our knowledge of these parrots.
There will be an upper limit of 20 people for logistic reasons.
Interested people may contact Stephen directly at <>.
However, Stephen will only be online until shortly before Christmas, after
which he is moving to Queensland. Until Stephen acquires a new address
expressions of interest can be sent to me at the address below.
Cheers, Hugo.
