Meanwhile here in SE Melbourne we are spending, I think, $4m. on digging big holes in Elsternwick Park and the neighbouring golf course to hold water when the Elster Creek cannot cope with "20 year floods". These are occurring more often than that because of the amount of concrete poured over the earth upstream. The holes will be on the site of an old swamp which was drained and filled in (at a cost of $$4m? in present day money) to enhance the amenities... The new wetland will include rushes, reeds etc. and an island to encourage wildlife ! Michael Norris |
