Hi Folks
For the fourth year in a row two Great-billed Herons have nested at Daintree
and now have a nestling. If all goes well the parent birds will start on a
predictable feeding routinethat will last for almost 12 months. One of the
parents is regularly sighted flying over the Daintree Village at dawn
(5.25am this morning) and late afternoon. The fledgling will probably not
leave the nest or nest tree until early March next year but I am getting
good regular sightings of parent birds preening after the very messy and
noisy feeding sequence. Daintree is also a good place to see and hear Black
Bitterns with almost 100% sightings during my dawn tour. Buff-breasted
Paradise-kingfishers are light on at present but I have heard one solitary
bird calling on 14 and 26 Nov although I have been at Iron Range during that
time with very few BbPk's ther also. Usually they are highly audible and
commonly seen by now.
I am literally on the way out the door to take a film crew on the river to
film Papuan Frogmouths.
