I wasn't going to comment on tapes, but ...

Someone mentioned the Noisy Scrubbird at Two People's Bay.  The rangers
conduct an annual census.  Obviously you can't find them easily, but they
are very territorial.  Therefore they count the number of singing males.

I don't know very much about the census details, but I thought that a major
reason for discouraging tapes there was because they played tapes briefly
to get the males to respond so that they could count them.  You try
accessing some of the country that they occur in!!  This way they can count
them quite accurately from a distance.  If the males were to become used to
the tapes then they wouldn't respond.

They also relocate a number of birds each year to other suitable habitat to
reduce the risk from fire.  I imagine that they would attract the birds to
the mist nest by playing tapes?????

Maybe someone (Allan Burbidge?) knows more details.
