1997 AUSTRALIAN BIRD RESEARCH DIRECTORY:
CALL FOR SUBMISSIONS
There is a lot of research conducted on Australia birds. However, it is a
challenge for most professional biologists, amateur bird-watchers and
natural historians to be aware of the research in just their own area(s) of
interest and expertise. It is an even bigger challenge to be aware of all
the major Australian bird research programs that are under way in Australia
and overseas.
Most of us probably do not learn about many research programs until the
results are published and/or presented at conferences or public meetings.
The results of many studies are never published or are presented as
technical reports that are not distributed widely, so few people get to
know about them. Therefore, an annual directory of Australian bird research
projects is a useful tool for all those who are interested in learning
about Australian bird research.
At about this time last year, I called upon many of you to submit details
of bird research projects that were funded in 1996 for inclusion in the
1996 Australian Bird Research Directory. The response was terrific - 93
research groups/individuals provided descriptions for a total of 217
research projects that were conducted in 1996. The 1996 Directory was
placed on the Birds Australia (Royal Australasian Ornithologists Union)
home page <http://www.vicnet.au/~birdsaus>.
The 1996 Directory has been used a great deal by scientists and
bird-watchers throughout the year, both nationally and internationally. You
can still view the directory on the Birds Australia home page.
I am now calling for submissions for the 1997 Australian Bird Research
Directory. Once again, I am limiting my request to information about
?funded? bird research projects to keep the resultant directory to a
manageable size. A funded project is defined as one that is financed by a
research grant or donation and/or has support (provision of resources or
finances) from a host institution.
Information about each project should be presented under the following
headings:
1. Project Title.
2. Chief Investigators.
3. Host Institution(s).
4. Optional Project Description (up to 50 words).
5. Time-scale (including starting and finishing dates).
6. Funding Agency(ies).
7. Contact Telephone Number.
8. Contact Facsimile Number.
9. Email Address.
The deadline for submission of information is Monday, 5 January 1998. This
will allow me to compile the directory and place it on the Birds Australia
home page by mid-February 1998. Like last year, I will give you weekly
updates on the progress of the receipt of information between now and
completion of the directory.
Contributions to the 1997 Australian Bird Research Directory can be sent to
me at my home or work email addresses, or faxed to me at the Birds
Australia National Office (03-9882 2677).
I?d appreciate it if you could also pass this notice onto other people who
are not on my emailing list, but who you know have conducted research on
Australian birds in 1997, especially if those people are in your host
institution or department.
Feel free to contact me if you need any more information about either the
1996 or 1997 Australian Bird Research Directories. I look forward to
receiving your contributions soon.
Yours sincerely,
Stephen.
