John Leonard asked about several species and where to find them at
Hattah-Kulkyne N.P.
I wish you luck with your search. In 1993 and 1995 I did extensive
bird watching throughout the NP but failed to record either species
you are seeking.
Hope the following is of some help.
Striated Grasswren: its normal habitat indicates one should find it
along the Konardin Track which starts 2km north of the Lake Mournpoul
campsite. I saw Rufous Crowned Emu-Wren (mallee race)along there in
several locations. The track is sandy but was passable to 2wd.
Slender Billed Thornbill: now for the bad news. This species has not
been recorded in Hattah-K.N.P. according to the official birdlist I have
(pub. March 1993). Suitable habitats exist north of Lake Mournpoul along
the Mournpoul Track and possibly in the eastern half of the park but
there are few tracks there.
More suitable habitat might exist around Pink Lakes (Murray-Sunset NP)
west of Ouyen or Wyperfeld NP to the south where it has been recorded.
Good bird watching.
Hope you see what you seek.
Trevor Hampel.
