Hi!
Another news cutting from the local Straits Times. Thought you may find it
interesting. I am just wondering what happened to the raptors.

No sunshine, so birdwatchers stay away

BIRDWATCHERS become the latest victims of the haze yesterday when only a
few turned up at Telok Blangah Hill for an annual birdwatching event.

Because raptors or birds of prey use warm currents of air rushing up from
the ground to stay aloft, the lack of sunshine due to the haze meant that
they were hardly any to be seen, said Mr Lim Kim Keang, who chairs the
Nature Society's (Singapore) bird group.

The bird-lovers were taking part in the Asia Raptor Watch, in which they
record, count and observe the different species of raptors or birds of prey
migrating through the region.

The turnout for the count was also poor - few than five enthusiasts met as
scheduled at 9 am at Telok Blangah Green, compared to nearly 30 at the
raptor count in 1995.

The raptor count is part of the month-long Nippon Telegraph and Telephone
Corporation World Bird Count which started last Wednesday.

Activities this month in Singapore included guided walks at the Botanic
Gardens, Bukit Timah Nature Reserve and Pulau Ubin.

A list of event times and venues can be obtained at this website:

Today, 5 oct 97, the Nature Society of Singapore organised its FIRST NATURE
DAY in Singapore. The slogan for this year's Nature Day is "Wake up to
Nature". I think it is an appropriate slogan, given the current haze.

Regards,

Victor
