Three Baillon's Crake were seen this afternoon on the wetland adjacent to the
golf club car park at Belmont Common. Obviously the Purple Swamphens did not
eat them all! We hope they'll breed again this year.
What happened about your nomination of Baillon's Crake to the Flora & Fauna
Guarantee?

Thanks Martin
Clive rang me this morning and we are going to"put up" the snipe this evening
to see if there are enough present to make it worth while to mist net again.
It's a bit early in the season but Clilve found some birds last year in well
advanced moult. The question is , when did they start the moult, here or in
Japan?
Clive says that Braeside is dry and has no snipe at present. That couls make
Belmont Common even more important.

Hello Valda,
My sincere apologies for not being more careful
with your surname.
It has just occurred to me that the Victorian Wader
Study Group did some netting of Snipe at the Common a year
or two ago and may have some idea for the questions you're
after.
Clive Minton is the President, I believe, and may be able
to help. Clives e-mail address is
All the best with your endeavors
Martin
