Request for identification please

Hi
I saw a bird a couple of weeks ago which I have not been able to trace
in my Slater Field Guide to Australian birds, so I wondered if you could
tell me what it was.  I have never seen anything like it anywhere.
It was lightish grey with a black skull cap and a black mark on its wing
running parallel (about 1 centimetre in) with the edge.  Apart from the
black markings it appeared to be the same shade of light (slate?) grey
all over.   
It was about the size of a noisy miner (one of which was nearby so I
could compare), perhaps a shade larger, but with a shape more like a
honey eater.
It was in Scott Street, Elwood, perched on the telephone wire and it was
around 3 p.m. on Sunday 22nd June.
Any ideas as to identification will be gratefully received.
