A challenge on Friday night by Tony Palliser to see the most number of
species in the Sydney area this year had me rushing to North Head for some
sea birds. North Head is a very scenic lookout on the northern side of
Sydney harbour. Setting up a telescope on a beautiful sunny afternoon with
waves of tourists from all around the world dropping in for their photos
and videos of Sydney was really not sensible at all.
The number of times I had to answer "What are you looking at? Whales?" I
can't tell you. I left soon after one girl took over the scope so she could
see Sydney better. Fortunately she couldn't see a thing.
But I did. There were two rafts of over 1000 Fluttering Shearwaters just of
shore, 1 Giant Petrel, 1 Yellow-nosed Albatross, about 10 Black-browed
Albatross and a few common species.
