Alex Appleman (backed up by Glen Ingram) asks if there's "anything about
around Cairns?".

If you come up here Alex you'll be the first new bird we've seen for ages.
Just the usual I'm afraid. Rufous Owls, still sleeping, at 20 paces, one
day and a Golden Bowrbird at arm's length the next, feeding. Beautiful
birds.

Actually, the famous Phoebe Snetsinger has just passed through adding the
Rufous Owl to her over 8300 species list as she did so. Very impressive.
Watch for a feature on her in the Sydney Morning Herald.

And Max O'Sullivan and I found ONE Gouldian near Cumberland Dam, by
Georgetown. Next year there may be none left at all. Except in the aviaries
of one of the locals. But he's only got 20 or so left out of over 100 that
were there before he went on holiday!
And the missing ones are nowhere around the town or surrounding district
either. Looks like someone is 80 Gouldians better off. At say $50 each.
We'll be over in Katherine and Timber Creek next month. Hope there's a few
left over there.
Cheers
Andy Anderson
Cairns.
