Susan Myers, Stuart Dashper & I spent a very enjoyable two nights & days
at a favourite campsite in the Angahook-Lorne State Park (Otway Ranges,
SW Victoria) over the weekend; a very rewarding place for naturalists.
Though our target species, the Masked Owl, eluded us, we were partly
compensated by a pair of Powerful Owls calling from within the Masked
Owl territory. The Mountain Grey Gums are flowering at the moment,
attracting lots of honeyeaters and a few lorikeets. The place is alive
with Yellow-bellied Gliders at night, and we saw several Dusky
Antechinus out foraging during the day. Other highlights included Olive
Whistler, Rufous Bristlebird, Bassian Thrush, etc. One interesting
observation was that of a diminutive Collared Sparrowhawk (one of a
probable pair) valiantly rounding up a flock of 12 Gang-Gang Cockatoos,
and seeing them off out of the area. A complete list follows, in
BirdInfo format.
