Katie Bertsche wrote about a book called "Down & Dirty Birding" and
included one excerpt. The book is hilarious and also a very good book
about North American birding although many of the tips given apply here as
well.
The author is Joey Slinger, a Canadian humorist, writer and radio host as
well as a real birdwatcher. The book is published and printed by Key
Porter Books and costs C$19.95 in Canada which means it probably costs
AUD$34.95 or more here if you could find it.

Listing
A bird comes in many denominations of listing value.
Take a red-winged Blackbird. By every estimate, there are more
Red-winged Blackbirds in North America than any other kind of bird.
But if you have never seen one before, thefirst one you lay eyes on
is your life bird.
If it is the first Red-wing you have seen returning after winter,
it is a year bird.
If you are on a bird watching trip, the first Red-wing you see will
be a trip bird.
The first one you see the next day will be a day bird.
If you have seen 385 Red-wings already today, the next one you see
will be a garbage bird. So were the preceding 384.
