Birding-Aus readers may like to know that Peregrines are in fact resident in Sydney and are reported to Birdline weekly. We have a policy though of not publising them due to persecution from pigeon racers. All records are collated for the records though. A few years ago a letter was published in a major newspaper from a pigeon club stating how peregrines were "introduced by man to Australia and should therefore be exterminated". We all know this is wrong of course. However the point is that we have to keep tight lipped about the numbers of Peregrines out there. So please be careful if this thread develops. The Sydney Morning Herald regularly mentions how someone saw a "poor defenceless" Gull/Pigeon plucked from mid air over a Sydney street! Chris Gladwin Sydney, Australia |
