Thanks to the very kind folk who replied to my enquiry about a bird
at the southern tip of New Ireland ( in Papua New Guinea ) which is
reported to bark like a dog. Suggestions included crows ...C. o. insularis
and Grey Crow (Corvus tristis)
and pigeons...
I am very keen to get a tape of bird song of this area. Can anyone let me
know where I might be able to get one?( if any exist). I also want to hear
any other sounds such as traditonal music, frogs, burial chants, crickets,
cicadas, crabs.
I am helping my wife with a play she has written ( " Paradiso Fantasma" )
about an ill fated colonisation attempt in Port Praslin, otherwse known
as Port Breton or Irish Cove. She is now working with a composer to create
evocative soundscapes which will suggest a menacing and threatening situation
where settlers died in dense jungles. That is why she is trying to follow
up a three hundred year old reference to the strange mournful barking
call of a bird, which terrified the settlers.
So if anyone can suggest sound sources for any of these things
we would be love to hear from you.
Thanks, cheers!
Alex Heathwood.
