1996 AUSTRALIAN BIRD RESEARCH DIRECTORY

UPDATE 6:

FINAL REQUEST FOR CONTRIBUTIONS.

On 24 December 1996 I called upon fellow bird researchers to contribute to the
1996
Directory of Australian Bird Research Projects. The closing date for
contributions is
the 7 February 1997. From the information provided, I hope to be able to
produce a
directory of Australian bird research projects that were conducted in 1996 for
inclusion
on the Internet by the end of February 1997.

Yet more gaps in information that were identified in the update were filled.
Researchers
scattered throughout Australia responded to Update 5, and there was an
especially good
response from researchers in tertiary institutions. Two researchers have
responded from
overseas. Thanks also to those people who have urged others to contribute to the
directory.

By 5 pm EST on Tuesday, 4 February 1997 I had received contributions from 62
researchers:

Thanks also to those people who are on the e-mailing list but who have told me
that they
did not conduct funded bird research in 1996.

You only have THREE MORE DAYS to contribute information to the directory. I do
not have
the e-mail addresses or fax numbers of everyone who conducted research on
Australian
birds in 1996. Therefore, I have a special plea to everyone who reads this
message to
ask/remind colleagues who are not in the above list to consider contributing
information
to the directory.

Some of the centres of active bird research that I have not yet heard from
include:

· Many tertiary institutions in Queensland and Tasmania.
· Government wildlife agencies in Qld and NSW. Complete lists of research
projects from
agencies in Tasmania and South Australia have not yet been received.
· Some state museums, especially in Queensland and South Australia.
· The Biodiversity Group of Environment Australia.

I am also interested in hearing about funded projects that were conducted by
regional,
national and special-interest bird groups. I would especially like to hear from
the Bird
Observers Club of Australia, Australian Bird Study Association and the major
state-based
bird groups.

It would be great if you could spend a few minutes of your time helping to fill
the
gaps. I look forward to receiving information from you before the end of the
week.

Kind regards,

Dr Stephen Ambrose
RAOU Research and Conservation Manager
