Yet another Sydney pelagic! Half a dozen of us got out onboard the
Halicat on Sunday to see if we could see a few of the interesting birds
that have been around rececntly. It was actually a fishing charter trip,
but nevertheless we got out as far as the bird trips normally do.
Species seen;
Little Penguin [3]
Wandering Albatross [6-8]
Black browed Albatross [5]
Cape Petrel [1]
Great winged Petrel [100+]
Mottled Petrel [2-3]
Providence Petrel [3]
Black or Westland Petrel [3]
Fluttering Shearwater [2]
Wedge tailed Shearwater [100+]
Short tailed Shearwater [10 000+]
Sooty Shearwater [10+]
White faced Storm Petrel [2]
Wilson's Storm Petrel [6]
Gannet [1]
Long tailed Skua [2]
Pomarine Skua [1]
Silver Gull
Crested Tern
Common Tern
unidentified Cook's/Gould's type Petrel [2]
dolphin sp. [20]
One of the Mottled Petrels came in very close and gave us excellent
views. Opinion on the Black or Westland Petrels favoured Black on the
basis of relative size to Great winged, but we can't be sure. The Short
tailed Shearwaters were passing us most of the day, with hundreds on the
water near the boat for about half an hour.
