In the latest VicGroup letter (comes with The Bird Observer for Vic's)
Marilyn Hewish talks about the extinctions in Hawaii, caused mainly by
introductions. "The tragic history of Hawaii's biota should serve as a
lesson for another island with a rich natural flora and fauna and
besieged with mass introductions - Australia ... The vast expanse of
Australia has bought some time for its unique plants and animals but,
unless it is used wisely, the end result may be a continent-sized version
of Hawaii." (VicGrouup Newsletter No. 36: p.5)

Very well put, and a frightening analogy.
