There is a comprehensive book, Ernst Mayr's Birds of the South-west Pacific (1945), which is useful but not a modern field-guide. Tell your brother to look out for rails on Malaita; there are Bush-hens there and possibly also Woodford's Rails (sometimes listed as extinct, but I thought I may have seen some).
