Trashing of CF and SD cards is common if you do not follow safe shutdown
practices. You must unmount any file systems on the CF before you remove power
from your system, else the CF can easily be over-written with garbage. For a

This is a white paper on preventing file system corruption. We had to modify
our system design to use a large capacitor as a temporary power backup when
main power was removed. The capacitor provides just enough time to alert the
processor that power is failing so that it can run a script that unmounts the
SD card file systems. Since we did this, no SD card failures have been seen.
