My preference is to do cross-development on a Linux host, share the built
binaries and libraries using an NFS mounted share on the test target, and run
the binaries using either a serial console or SSH login to the target. When the
application is working, build all of the components into a flash memory
distribution image, using the development host tools.
Using the target platform as a development platform gets old fast for big
builds.
