Thanks Mike. There are lots of ways to skin a cat as it were. Jesse's suggestion of modifying the FPGA seems to be a good one here, if he has tested it well. Apparently, a high resolution timer is not the primary goal here. I would point out that if Jesse was this responsive to all customers I would feel no need to help them out.

I agree with Marvin that a properly written interrupt handler can work well.  I don't know the specifics of your requirements (for example do you need a high quality TCP-IP stack...) but for C programmable hard real time I like the XMOS parts.  Cheap, Free high quality programming environment,  The basic concept is a dedicated HW thread per I/O task, and very good inter-thread communications.

Komal,

I would not recommend going down the route of using kernel patches for high resolution timers in Linux for controlling a motor.  Linux is not well suited for hard realtime applications.  However, the FPGA on our boards is very good at meeting very specific timing like this.  We have created FPGA cores on the TS-7558-BOX and TS-7520-BOX with a common software interface which includes PWM control.  I would recommend migrating to one of these boards which can then use a very simple example:
