I got a shipment of several TS-7260s yesterday, and got hard failures on the
first two that I powered up. When I apply power, the red LED blinks on and off
once, then comes on and stays on.
On the first board, I plugged a serial cable into the console, a thumb drive in
one of the USB ports, and a network cable in the the RJ-45 jack. The very
first time I powered the board up, it failed as described above. Hyperterm was
connected to the console at the time and showed no interaction.
On the second board, I powered it up with no cables connected and it appeared
to boot just fine, as the LEDs flickered on and off as normal. I then turned
power off, plugged in the serial cable, powered on, and the board failed as
above.
I checked the voltages on the serial line, and they appear to be within spec.
The TS-7260 power is supplied by a 12VDC wall wart that I checked with a
voltmeter prior to powering up the first board. All work was done with
reasonable no-static procedures.
Now I have two boards that refuse to boot, and I am a little gun shy about
applying power to the rest of the boards. I have initialized a good number of
these boards over the years using this same procedure without issue.
I plan to file an RMA, but my question to the group is: How does this happen?
Can a bad serial cable (that appears to be good) kill a TS-7260? A more
general question is: Is the TS-7260 a robust SBC, or is it fairly easy to
destroy? These are not the first boards that have failed under fairly benign
circumstances and I am wondering what other people's experiences with this
board are.
