I recently switched from the 7200 to the 7553, but on the 7200 I was using a custom 2.6.29 kernel. It's really quite simple once you have Matts Patch, that guy is a lifesaver. I have some documentation somewhere that I wrote as to how to properly compile the kernel, I'd be more than happy to look for it if that would interest you.
