Thanks, Don. I ended up recompiling modutils, and finally got depmod to stop
dumping. It still didn't work, and I confirmed that I needed to rebuild the
kernel.
Recompiling modutils wasn't too bad, once I installed bison, and flex-old (and
patch, and dpkg-dev...)
