For anyone else who runs into this problem,I worked around the booting issue by
commenting out the following line in /linuxrc in the Busybox environment:

check-usb-update >/dev/null 2>&1 </dev/null &

For some reason, after executing check-usb-update, the tssdcarda4 is no longer
mounted as /mnt/root. My guess is that Linux `likes' hard drives better than SD
cards and tried to mount the HD as the file system root instead of the SD
partition.
