I had a few problems with COM2 (search previous threads) 

The following worked for me. So I suggest you try it as a starter test, then 
you can upgrade/improve as necessary:

(1) Open with: fd  = open("/dev/ttyAM1", O_RDWR | O_NOCTTY );

(2) Initialise attributes as:

        cfmakeraw(&tio);        
        cfsetispeed(&tio, B4800);

//  set to block for 1 second until any chars arrive 
        tio.c_cc[VMIN]  = 0;
        tio.c_cc[VTIME] = 10;
        

(3) Then in main program, read one byte at a time in a loop: 
        read(fd, buffer, 1);

The read function will return either every second if no characters have been 
received, or when any one character has been received. 

If this works, then you can proceed to the next stage.
