It looks like every open() returns a new file descriptor, and each fd
holds info about the open file. So, yes and yes (not much though).

I use a global variable for /dev/mem fd, then each area of code mmaps
its own stuff during init. The question is what happens when you mmap
the same page of memory twice. glibc manual didn't say anything about
it.
