Yes, you need kernel with GPIOLIB support and you need this in the kernel:
CONFIG_ARCH_REQUIRE_GPIOLIB=y
CONFIG_GPIOLIB=y
CONFIG_GPIO_SYSFS=y
You can try my precompiled 2.6.34.7[1], there's rootfs[2] and additional
kernel modules[3] also.
