Yes. And no :)
I booted new kernel off the new EABI nfs rootfs, then cleaned mtdblock1 with 
flash_eraseall -j /dev/mtdblock1.
jffs2 automatically formats empty partition on mount, so
mount -t jffs2 /dev/mtdblock1 /mnt did that job.
The only thing left was to copy rootfs under /mnt.
For production use I have small initrd which unpacks rootfs.tbz2 off the usb 
key, so I do not have to use nfs.
(board is booted to the redboot prompt, than XModem transfer is used to store 
new kernel, and load initrd, and start machine in install mode)
I am using busybox-1.16.0, and flash_eraseall is part of it.
