It runs faster because all those useless stores to memory get optimized away. Are you declaring the I/O locations as 'volatile'?

Another doubt, if I compile the code using -O1 optimization it runs much much
faster but it seems the I/Os stop to work. DO this compiling option changes the
regular behavior of the I/O as programmed?
