Also be aware that busybox has seen light-years of development since the
version you are using. I've seen several odd failures, simple things that work
on other systems, that turn out to be a bug or corner case in busybox (usually
fixed long ago).
So don't hesitate to try an updated bb, or compile your own tool to use instead
of bb, if you see something strange while testing mgetty. And Russ is right,
mgetty is made for this.
