I asked Technologic's support staff about this one (thank you, Kris!).
Apparently the etch distro has been put into archive state so upgrading
components won't work. However, switching to lenny is relatively painless (I
used the ftp link from the 7390 directory) and that has a more recent glibc.
It's also EABI so that's good.
So the lenny EABI distro combined with the crosstool-NG configuration found in
this group's file list all done on Debian installed under Parallels works just
fine and ultimately I can now use the inotify system.
