It sounds like you have getty running on that line, ps should tell you.
Disable the getty from running by editing your /etc/inittab file
and sending hup to init.
If that's not the case you will have to configure the relevant serial
characteristics. Serial programming advice under Linux (and other unices,
it's all much the same) is generally available on the web.
