Got that right.  So my next step was to create an Ad-hoc network on a Mac.  
Sure enough, iwlist wlan0 scanning saw the network.  I reentered the other 
commands but I couldn't ping.

That begs a question.  Let's say you have several SBCs in a lab that you need 
to talk to from one laptop.  These SBCs will be turned off every day and they 
won't have a display/keypad or terminal connected to them.  You want to have a 
fixed (but changeable) address so that when you turn everything on, the laptop 
can see them all and know which one is which.  Do you need a router for this or 
will Ad-hoc work?  And what happens if the SBC is fired up before the router 
(i.e. a scan wouldn't see it initially)?
