[ts-7000] force disk i/o to flush?

I lost power a few minutes after I edited, compiled, and linked a C source 
file.  The system hard crashed, and I was surprised that when I rebooted the 
debian linux from the micro SD card, the C file did not have the changes.

Am I right in assuming that the disk changes were held in a cache and the hard 
crash resulted in the disk changes never actually being written out?  

and as a follow up. how do I force the micro SD card to be physically written?
